Never seen that tube icon before, must be an ancient tutorial

i dont know how to select the text, so all i've done is got tube pics on top of some text

Before you type your text, click on selection at the top..

Are you using your learning centre palette?

No.. guess thats something i closed before i started?

Go to palettes at the top, click on learning centre, it will open on the left side

auto hide it, it reopens when you hold your cursor over it.....

It gives instructions for whichever tool you are using.
