For months now, maybe even at least a year, i havent been able to do the automatic update on Windows. Or, at least it wont update one thing. This is the error message i always get.

IPB Image

Any ideas?
Frere
I dunno myself, but i did have the same problem as you (As i told you)

Everytime I shut my pc down, it would try and install updates, but instead would turn off before the first one finished..

Then one day it just worked :S
Rach227
did you try to system restore b4 this problem started?
oolongcha
Shamelessly stolen from elsewhere, but it might be worth trying. Tthere seems to be 3 possible problems, and the 2nd way seems be the more common problem.

After checking the Windows Update log which was uploaded automatically when submitting the case, I noticed that the error code 0x80004002 was encountered.

This error is most likely caused by one of the following conditions:

1. The Windows Update Temporary folder is corrupted.
2. The Windows Update Agent 3.0 is not installed properly.
3. The Windows Installer 3.1 is corrupted.

We can perform the following steps to get the issue resolved. After trying each suggestion, please go to the Windows Update site to check the issue. Thanks for your cooperation.

NOTE: Some third party programs can also affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the Windows Update site later. Please be sure to enable them again when completing the update process.

Suggestion 1: Clean up Windows Update temporary folder
===========================================
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

Net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

Net start WuAuServ

If the issue still persists, please move on to suggestion 2.

Suggestion 2: Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0
======================================
1. Please download the file from the following link:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

2. Save the file to C: drive.
3. Click Start->Run, type: "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce" (without quotations) and then press Enter to install the Windows Update engine.

There is a space between "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and "/wuforce"

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, please save the downloaded file to the D: drive, because the file cannot be launched directly from the C: root directory.

If it still does not work, please proceed to suggestion 3 to reinstall Windows Installer 3.1.

Suggestion 3: Reinstall Windows Installer 3.1
==================================
1. Press Start and choose Run.
2. Type in "cmd" (without quotation marks) and press OK.
3. In the command line, type in the following command and press Enter:
MSIexec /unregister

4. Then, type in the following command and press Enter:
MSIexec /regserver

After finishing the above steps, please check the result again. If the issue persists, please click Start, click Control Panel, and click Add/Remove Programs to check if Windows Installer 3.1 has been installed. If it has, please highlight and remove it. After that, please reinstall Windows Installer 3.1 from the following link.

Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)

Let us know how you get on!

Ok i've done suggestion 1. If that doesnt work i'll try the next one tomorrow
zzzzzzzuhlast
oolongcha, that was a great reply, I hope one of the suggestions in you post works.
Scorpio, The one thing I noticed in your screen shot was you have service pack 1.
Microsoft has service Pack 3 as the latest series of bug fixes and updates.
When you get this issue fixed and you use automatic updates that will be the next thing you will install.
oolongcha
Hmmm... I'm wondering now if it will work; I've an idea that it applies to SP2; I don't know about SP1 huh.gif
Scorpio
ZZZ, i'm pretty sure i have SP2 huh.gif but i see your point.

Well since doing it, i didnt get the option last night to install as i logged off. And now theres no warning sign yellow thing asking me to update. But i defo turned automatic updates back on during what i did

So it worked...??
Scorpio
Dont think so cos i havent had the option come up (the yellow icon on the bottom right) to update. If it doesnt give me it again, i'll go into My Computer and try to do it that way myself
Scorpio
Ok so the yellow update icon IPB Image
didnt come up when i came on tonight so i went to the windows update site via my update icon in My Computer and it scanned the pc, then came up with this
IPB Image

which told me to download this
IPB Image

and i did that, and it led me to download sp3
IPB Image

After about half an hour of that downloading, i restarted after it told me to. And when it came back on, the yellow update icon was there. So i click to download and it tried to download the same sp1 thing again and again it didnt work
IPB Image

But i definitely downloaded SP3, as you can see here

Guess i'll be trying oolongchies option #2 tomorrow closedeyes.gif
Scorpio
Looks like its a problem for alot of people
oolongcha
Sorry if I'm being stupid, but have you ever installed SP2...??
Scorpio
Yeah i'm sure i have. Cant check right now though but I'm assuming it wouldnt give me Sp3 unless i had it?

I don't know - if it does, and you haven't, I think it would cause a problem. "System Information" on the left hand menu in My Computer will tell you for certain, but as zzz says, the dialogue box says you've only SP1.

On the other hand, when I feel that I don't want to use my computer for a few hours, I've got SP3 to instal as well - if I've a problem, I'll let you know!
Scorpio
I dont think it does. I think it says the security update for SP1 isnt downloading. I dont think it implies that thats the only SP i have, especially as i downloaded and installed SP3 last night and still have this SP1 problem
Scorpio
I sorted it at last.

I ended up downloading loads of these things and got confused so i restored to last night before downloading sp3. It took me back to Sp2 so i did already have it. Anyway basically i found and followed this

The issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework component. At this time,
let's refer to the following steps to troubleshoot this issue:

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility
============================================
1. Visit:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9...1BD/msicuu2.exe
2. Save the file to your Desktop
3. Please double click the file msicuu2.exe on the Desktop to install this
tool on your computer.

Step 2: Remove .NET Framework 1.1
========================
1. Click Start -> (All) Programs->Windows Installer Clean Up.
2. See if you can find .NET Framework software. If so, remove it.
3. Restart the computer and see if the issue still exists.

For more information, please refer to:

And it was from here

So i think all in all, i had an old version of windows installer huh.gif
oolongcha
That's useful to know; I'm reluctant to try and instal the updates my computer is pestering me to instal.

I'm using XP HE SP2; but I've a copy of XP Pro Black SP3 that I've been meaning to instal - so I'm thinking I might just as well go ahead with a clean instal, as it's something I should probably do anyway.

Oh, and by the way - what the hell is .NET Framework? I downloaded it lastnight as I didn't have it and needed it for something (apparently). I still can't figure out what it is.
Scorpio
I have no idea shrug.gif
